House Passes Unnecessary, Divisive Bill to ‘Protect’ Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON—Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protect and Serve Act of 2018:

“The House’s passage of this bill is deeply misguided and unnecessary. Law enforcement officers are already one of the most protected groups under law in our nation. This bill will undermine advocacy for police accountability. It will do nothing to improve officer safety and wellness. And it will increase the lack of trust and division between law enforcement and the vulnerable communities they serve.”
