WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on President Trump’s expected declaration of a “national emergency” on the southern border.

“Trump’s vanity project is not a national emergency. Congress has repeatedly rejected his call to waste taxpayer dollars on a southern border wall to respond to a so-called and non-existent crisis. His declaration is an abuse of power, an attempt to end-run the Congress, and will not stand. Any lawmaker who allows this action opens the door for a future president to ignore the will of Congress. The crisis is not at the border – it’s in the White House.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
