WASHINGTON – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on today’s nomination of Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Ross Haywood to fill a vacancy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Under Republican Senate leadership, the confirmation of judicial nominations has reached historic lows and has even led to an unprecedented blockade of any nomination to the Supreme Court:

“We applaud the nomination of the eminently qualified Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Ross Haywood to fill the vacancy on the Third Circuit and urge the Senate leadership to allow for a fair hearing and timely vote on her confirmation.

Since Chairman Chuck Grassley and Majority Leader McConnell took over the judicial nominations process, the dilatory pace of hearings, committee votes, and floor votes on nominees has been shameful. This cynical strategy of handcuffing the courts has risen to new heights since these men declared a unilateral blockade on all potential Supreme Court nominees.

We urge the committee to fill its constitutional duty to perform its ‘advice and consent’ role in considering judicial nominations and to do its job to provide a fair hearing and timely vote on the Haywood nomination and the eventual nominee for the Supreme Court.”
