About the Role:
The Justice Assistant will be critical in providing programmatic and administrative support to the organizations’ Justice Program and the Campaigns and Programs Department. The assistant will support the Justice Program’s interdepartmental programmatic and outreach efforts to reform the criminal legal system, with a particular emphasis on reentry and pretrial reform issues. The assistant will also provide support to the Campaigns and Programs Department.
This position will report to the Sr. Program Director, Justice, and is part of the collective bargaining unit.
Justice Program and Campaigns and Programs Department Support (50%): The assistant will perform a variety of administrative tasks to help leadership manage the work of the Justice Program and Campaigns and Programs Department, including but not limited to:
- Coordinate materials, support planning of meetings and events, travel reservations, and calendar management.
- Support the logistics and administration of the Justice Task Force and coalitions as needed.
- Track and process contracts, memorandums of understandings, invoices, etc.
- Track activities for reporting purposes.
- Provide administrative support for the Managing Director, Campaigns and Programs Department, which includes managing their calendar.
- Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Programmatic Support and Engagement on Key Justice Issues (25%): The assistant will support advancing criminal-legal reforms, with a particular but not exclusive focus on reentry.
- Work within the Justice Program and across issue-area programs where relevant issues arise.
- Assist and contribute to materials, outreach, meetings, trainings, and other needs.
Outreach and Relationship Building (25%): The assistant will advance our relationships with state- and national-allied organizations and groups to support our efforts to reform the criminal legal system.
- Support relevant Field Department-led partnerships.
- Assist with building relationships with key organizations and individuals focused on this area.
- Participate in trainings and share insights garnered from these relationships with the Justice Program to help shape strategy and planning.
What you will bring:
- Previous experience as a programmatic assistant in nonprofits is preferred.
- Direct experience with formerly incarcerated communities, civil rights groups, and organizations working to reform the criminal legal system is preferred.
- Ability to balance multiple tasks, manage a complex workload, and organize time efficiently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Google applications.
- Has the willingness to learn and adapt to changes in work assignments and deadlines.
- Has a passion and commitment to civil rights.
- Demonstrates strong writing and verbal skills.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Desire and ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Salary Range – $51,388– $63,168, dependent on years of related experience.

Currently, staff has the option to work from the office or home while we determine our long-term policy on remote and hybrid work. Please note this position is not permanently remote and over time the person filling this role may be required to work on occasion or regularly from the Washington, DC-based office.
