Communications Manager, Census Counts Campaign
The Leadership Conference Education Fund seeks a Communications Manager for The Census Counts Campaign, a newly formed collaborative, housed at the Leadership Conference Education Fund, to ensure that the 2020 decennial census is fair and accurate.
The census is a vital part of our democracy as it is used for reapportioning congressional seats; distributing annual federal funds; and, identifying the need and location for schools and hospitals, and much more. The Communications Manager will coordinate the Census Count’s communications strategy implementation.
The Leadership Conference Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, builds public will for federal policies that promote and protect civil and human rights in the United States. Founded in 1969 as the education and research arm of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, The Education Fund’s campaigns inform, educate, and empower local, state and national leaders to advance and protect civil and human rights and progressive change in the United States.
Census Counts is a collaborative campaign led by more than 15 national organizations and dozens of community partners in more than 30 states that are mobilizing to ensure that the 2020 Census is fair and accurate—so that hard-to-count communities (people of color, households with low incomes, urban & rural communities, young children (ages 0−4), and young adult mobiles) do not miss out on the political power they deserve and the resources their communities have earned. The campaign works to educate stakeholders and the public about the importance of a fair and accurate census to our communities, families, and children. The Communications Manager will coordinate communications strategy implementation in support of the Census Counts campaign. This individual will also manage day-to-day media relations efforts; provide strategic direction for the campaign; and, assist state staff in developing goals for, and support efforts to advance, the campaign’s objectives. The Manager will work in collaboration with partner organizations and the Census Counts Campaign Director and report to the Managing Director of Communications.
Ideal candidates for this position will hold a Bachelor’s degree with 3 to 6 years’ experience in media relations, communications, or related areas, as it relates to public affairs. The most competitive candidates will have well-developed skills in building and maintaining media relationships, and experience working with media outlets at national, regional, and local levels, as well as bilingual capacities in English and Spanish. This communications professional can execute a strategic and forward leaning communications plans that draw upon the resources, expertise, and interests of key stakeholders and partners. Competitive candidates will also have experience working with diverse audiences, including elected officials, community leaders, coalition partners, and the public.
This is a full-time, temporary, exempt position ending on March 31, 2021, with salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The person selected for this temporary position will work remotely.
