Civil and Human Rights Coalition Opposes Mark Green as Secretary of the Army

WASHINGTON—The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights today called on the Senate Armed Services Committee to reject President Trump’s intended nominee for Secretary of the Army, Mark E. Green.

“One of the strengths of our military is its diversity. Our service secretaries must stand for all of the brave men and women who serve. There is no place for bigotry in the U.S. Army, and Green’s previous comments disqualify him from leadership,” said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference.

In a letter sent to the Committee, The Leadership Conference said, “Mr. Green is a Tennessee state senator and right-wing culture warrior who has made divisive and offensive comments about marginalized and vulnerable communities in America. He has supported legislation and policies that would harm the LGBT community, Muslims, immigrants, and women. We urge the Senate Armed Services Committee to oppose him if he is formally nominated for this position.”
