Civil Rights Organizations Urge Lawmakers to Pass Real Election Reform at Supreme Court Event

Washington, D.C. ? A coalition of civil rights, civic, labor, religious, women’s, disability, and student organizations will hold a news conference Wednesday, April 3 to urge Congressional passage of election reform legislation that truly guarantees the right to vote for all Americans. The news conference will be held in front of the Supreme Court beginning at 11 a.m.

It is expected that the Senate will debate election reform legislation when it returns from its recess on April 8th. The legislation is designed to correct the problems that plagued the 2000 presidential election that prevented millions of voters from casting votes and from having their ballots counted. While participants strongly support election reform, they are urging the Senate to pass this legislation without the provisions that will undermine existing law and make it much more difficult for minorities, the elderly, and disabled to vote.
