Coalition Releases Civil Rights Priorities for 116th Congress

WASHINGTON – The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights wrote members of the 116th Congress outlining the coalition’s legislative and oversight goals for the next two years. Achieving these priorities, which the coalition’s 11 task forces developed, would kickstart much-needed reforms to advance social and economic justice in this country. From the Civil Rights Act of 1957 to the present day, The Leadership Conference has led national efforts to pass and enforce the strongest civil rights protections possible.
“These past two years have shown us the debilitating effect of egregious civil rights rollbacks,” said Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “We as a country must resist any action that will politicize the protection of civil and human rights. These priorities urge congressional leadership to put the will and wellbeing of the people first.”
The priorities call for robust legislation and oversight in several areas to combat this administration’s rollbacks to our civil and human rights. While the list does not serve as an exhaustive agenda for every Leadership Conference member organization, it does represent top issues in the coalition’s collective agenda.
