Cuts to Head Start Show Challenge of Fiscal Restraint

In an attempt to cut federal spending, Republicans seek to defund Head Start, a program that provides preschool education for 3- and 4-year-olds. Head Start was targeted for cuts because members of Congress feel that the program receives too much money.
“We don’t face the current deficit because of Head Start,” said Democratic Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York.

Teach for America is the latest causality of the Republican-proposed budget cuts. The Obama Administration recently praised the success of Teach for America but decided to side with the GOP’s proposed funding cuts to the program.
“This loss of federal funding is a significant loss for us, and without it, we’re going to be forced to cut back the number of teachers that we place,” said Kerci Marcello Stroud, TFA’s vice president of communications. “That’s devastating to kids in the low-income communities that we’re trying to serve.”
