The Fight to End Partisan Gerrymandering Continues

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Gill v. Whitford:

“The fight to end partisan gerrymandering continues as the Supreme Court failed to provide clear guidance when it declined to strike down Wisconsin’s voting map in Gill v. Whitford. Every American has the right to a fair vote, and legislators who draw maps to rig our elections to favor one political party over another undermine our democracy. As Justice Kagan stated in her concurrence in this case: ‘when legislators can entrench themselves in office despite the people’s will – the foundation of effective democratic governance dissolves.’ As the case returns to the district court for further consideration, we will continue to urge states to create fair and independent redistricting commissions to prevent partisan gerrymandering so that all voices can be heard.”

The Leadership Conference participated in an amicus brief in this case, which is available here.
