WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement in support of Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s letter on staff diversity:

“The American people last week elected the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history, with more than 100 women joining the 116th Congress. The congressional workforce – particularly at senior levels – should reflect the broad diversity of the people they serve. The civil rights community applauds Leader Pelosi’s efforts to promote the hiring of diverse candidates for senior congressional staff positions. We call on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to recognize the importance of diversity in their hiring and to take concrete steps to increase diversity among the congressional workforce.”
