Washington, DC – A coalition of key advocacy groups – organized by the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) – met with House leadership this morning to stress the critical importance of the passing the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act (H.R.157/S.160).

The participants, which besides LCCR included the DC Appleseed Center, Common Cause and DC Vote, met with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer to emphasize the historic nature of the D.C. voting rights bill and to reiterate their commitment to its passage.

They released the following joint statement:

“Following the Senate’s passage of the D.C. House Voting Rights Act this week and a productive conversation with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer this morning, we are more encouraged than ever that D.C. residents might finally have real voting representation in Congress.

We are pleased that both chambers seem to recognize the fundamental injustice of taxation without representation in the District.  Residents of the District of Columbia fight and die in wars, pay taxes, and have all the obligations of citizenship, yet don’t have a vote in Congress.

We are confident that Congress is set to pass the legislation, and hope the House votes next week to right a wrong and finally give D.C. residents a vote in Congress.”
