Do Not Let These Three Threats to Justice Join the Federal Bench

Take Action: Call your senators (202) 224- 3121 and demand that they oppose the confirmation of Stuart Kyle Duncan of Louisiana, Thomas Farr of North Carolina, and Michael Brennan of Wisconsin to serve lifetime appointments as federal judges. Each nominee poses a threat to civil and human rights.

Our federal courts serve as the first line of defense against efforts to set back civil and human rights in America. In an era of attempted Muslim bans and a transgender military ban, a fair and independent federal court system is more important than ever. President Trump has nominated individuals for lifetime federal judgeships who have spent their careers trying to restrict our civil and human rights, and the Senate has been confirming them at a record pace. Here are three currently pending nominees who represent some of the biggest threats to justice:

  • Stuart Kyle Duncan, a Louisiana nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, has been at the center of the right-wing movement to diminish the civil rights of the LGBT community. His legal writings are hostile to marriage equality. He also is one of the nation’s leading lawyers in the effort to deny rights for transgender individuals in major cases, such as Gloucester County School Board v. Gavin Grimm. See our letter here.
  • Thomas Farr, a nominee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, has been the go-to lawyer for North Carolina’s voter suppression movement. Farr has repeatedly tried to restrict the right to vote during his 38-year legal career. Also, it appears that he misled the Senate Judiciary Committee about his part in efforts by the 1990 Jesse Helms for Senate campaign to illegally intimidate African Americans to keep them from the polls. See our letter here.
  • Michael Brennan, a Wisconsin nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, refused during his confirmation hearing to acknowledge that implicit racial bias exists in our nation’s criminal justice system. He was the chair of Governor Scott Walker’s judicial selection commission for state judges and he recommended individuals for judicial appointments who had made extreme and hateful anti-LGBT comments. See our letter here.

Trump’s extreme agenda is an attack on civil and human rights. We need federal judges who will uphold civil and human rights, not threaten them. Now is the time to fight back.
