Statement by Nancy Zirkin on Final Senate Passage of Wall Street Reform Legislation

“Today’s passage of the financial reform bill is a major victory for American consumers and a giant step toward ending the reckless Wall Street practices that drove our economy to the brink of the abyss, costing millions of hard-working families their homes, their jobs, and their retirement savings.

For decades, Wall Street has operated like a casino for the benefit of a greedy few, and Main Street paid the price. The Dodd-Frank bill will inject a much needed dose of sanity into our financial system and includes a number of common sense provisions that civil rights, consumer, and labor advocates have sought for years to protect consumers, homebuyers, and small businesses.

We commend those House and Senate members who stepped up to protect consumers, hold the Big Banks accountable, and provide a rational framework for our economy to grow in a more equitable way. The civil and human rights coalition strongly supports this historic legislation, and we look forward to seeing President Obama sign it into law.”
