WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference Education Fund, issued the following statement on the passing of Herb Sandler:

“Herb rose from modest beginnings to serve his country in uniform, create a successful business with his late wife, and together, they became staunch supporters of progressive organizations. The Leadership Conference Education Fund is a grateful recipient of the Sandler Foundation’s philanthropy. But more than that, his friendship, kindness, and counsel made us all better. He was not one to seek the spotlight, but many of the victories of the civil and human rights community would not have been possible without his foundation’s support. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his amazing life.”

The Leadership Conference Education Fund builds public will for federal policies that promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States. The Education Fund’s campaigns empower and mobilize advocates around the country to push for progressive change in the United States. It was founded in 1969 as the education and research arm of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. For more information on The Education Fund, visit civilrights.org/edfund/.
