Save the Pell Grant

By Shawn Dye, a summer intern

The federal Pell Grant program – which helps make a college education affordable for millions of students — is facing cuts in Washington, D.C. That’s why Save Pell — a coalition of civil rights, social justice, education, and youth organizations dedicated to protecting college opportunity for low-income and working-class students — has organized Save Pell Day.

If Pell Grants are cut, then so is the possibility of obtaining a higher education for students who would otherwise qualify for the program.

As a recipient of the Pell Grant, I can attest to the fact that this program has been monumental in providing students and their families with another avenue towards a better life. I hope that my younger sister will be able to get the same opportunity when she graduates from high school next year.

And be sure to check out this video I came across on the Save Pell website. It sends a strong message to members of Congress explaining how much of a mistake it would be to cut Pell Grant funding.

Let’s amplify that message.
