In an effort to balance district books and avoid bankruptcy, state education officials are calling for Detroit to close half its schools. As a result, classroom sizes in the remaining schools of the district will increase dramatically.

Labor faces a moment of truth in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget that calls for restrictions on collective bargaining rights for labor unions has been met with protests. Labor unions, including teacher unions, are among those protesting in Madison. Labor officials are worried that similar labor-weakening legislation will spread to other states.
“Some of the labor people are saying, ‘It’s the beginning of the fight back,’” said a top labor official. “But if the labor movement rallies and gets run over in Wisconsin, it opens [the gates] in every state for governors to start pushing harder to curtail labor rights.”
