Final Victory for Early Voting in Ohio

We noted last week that Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted launched one last effort to keep from having to implement early voting fairly and equally for all voters on the weekend before the election.  Fortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Husted’s request on Tuesday.  Having exhausted his appeals, Husted issued a directive to county election officials with uniform hours for early voting.

Husted’s directive caps a year of voting-rights victories for Fair Elections Ohio and a broad coalition of organizations that mobilized to defeat an unfair anti-voting law passed by the legislature and signed by the governor – and then fought officials’ relentless efforts to limit early voting.  See the story of that Ohio voting rights victory  in a new video produced by the Leadership Conference Education Fund.

Of course the ultimate victory over those who have tried to discourage voting is VOTING. Ohio voter participation groups can now focus on intensive nonpartisan Get Out the Vote efforts.  Visit Election Protection to find out what you need to know about casting a vote in your state.
