Interactive Map Links Voting Rights Advocates
A new online tool from The Leadership Conference Education Fund is helping organizations and advocates share resources and list events related to their voting rights work.
The tool is designed to allow approved users to upload information and associate it with a state or states where they are conducting voting rights work. The information is then presented to the user through a map that provides a graphical interface for browsing. The goal of the map is to help advocates easily find out what other groups are doing around the U.S.
The online tool was developed for groups working to counter the effects of a recent wave of state election laws seeking to severely limit or restrict access to ballot for millions of U.S. voters. From photo ID laws that disproportionately affect minority voters to the purging of voter rolls in states such as Florida, these laws are flying in the face of history and hearkening back to the pre-Civil Rights era when literacy tests, poll taxes, and other laws were used to keep African Americans from voting in Southern states.
