Honoring Rep. Augustus Hawkins
The 40th Anniversary Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award Dinner was held on May 8, 1990, in Washington, D.C.
Honorable Augustus Hawkins
Hawkins, California’s first black congressman, served in the House of Representatives for nearly thirty years, as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration for two terms and a member of the Committee on Education and Labor, the Joint Committee on Printing and the Joint Committee on the Library. He is perhaps best known for co-sponsoring, along with Senator Hubert Humphrey, the piece of legislation known as Humphrey-Hawkins.
