The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), the nation’s oldest and largest civil and human rights coalition, released the following statement on the denial of Hans von Spakovsky’s confirmation to the Federal Election Commission (FEC):

Wade Henderson, LCCR president and CEO, said: “We applaud the Senate leadership for preventing the confirmation of Hans von Spakovsky to the FEC.  Von Spakovsky allowed his personal views and partisan considerations to trump our nation’s voting rights laws.”

Nancy Zirkin, LCCR vice president and director of policy, said: “His record as a high-ranking lawyer in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, where, among other things, he endorsed restrictive state voter identification laws that infringe on the rights of poor and minority voters, makes von Spakovsky decidedly unsuited to sit on the federal agency charged with administering federal campaign finance laws.”

“LCCR calls on President Bush to nominate a fair and qualified candidate to oversee our election laws,” said Wade Henderson.
