NCAI Announces Winners of Census Art Competition
The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) congratulated 15 Native American artists last week on winning the Indian Country Counts national art competition.
The Indian Country Counts campaign was designed in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau to aid tribes with the 2010 Census count and promote an accurate count of all Native people. Because of mistrust of the federal government, as well as linguistic, geographical, and cultural challenges, Native Americans are among the hardest population to count.
“This art competition was to showcase that Native people are still here. This is a celebratory activity encouraging some of our youngest tribal members to support their families’ participation in the Census,” NCAI Executive Director Jacqueline Johnson Pata said.
The NCAI made the announcement on Census Day to remind American Indians and Alaska Natives that it is not too late to fill out their census forms.
The Leadership Conference Education Fund has partnered with NCAI and three other national civil rights organizations to encourage census participation among hard-to-count populations in 13 key areas around the country.
