Washington – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after President Obama laid out concrete steps that the administration will take to ensure an inclusive housing recovery, including advancing the nomination of Congressman Mel Watt to be the next director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), an independent agency that regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac:

“President Obama has shown an enduring commitment to using executive authority to advance a housing recovery that’s inclusive of all Americans. The initiatives announced yesterday were all clear, detailed, and achievable steps that will make homes a more secure investment for low- and middle-income Americans.

By simplifying the lending process, making it easier to refinance, and stabilizing neighborhoods that were most decimated by the housing bust, the administration is continuing its commitment to ensuring that people have safe and secure homes for their families.

But the administration cannot act alone. The Senate must also commit to confirming Congressman Mel Watt to lead FHFA. Doing so is a vital step toward responsible management and reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Congressman Watt has a long history of standing up for working families, promoting safe and affordable housing, and speaking out against predatory lending. The nation needs his talents and leadership at the FHFA. We urge the Senate to put partisanship aside and move to quickly confirm him.”
