Civil and Human Rights Coalition: Tax Extenders Proposal a Horrible Deal for Working Families

Washington – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president and director of policy at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to the proposal to eliminate tax breaks for working families while giving multinational corporations a permanent extension of tax relief:

“This Senate proposal to allow the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit expansions to expire is a horrible deal for working families.

The proposal, which would provide permanent tax relief to big business while denying it to 50 million working Americans, distorts our nation’s economic priorities by placing a heavy burden on those who can least afford it.

The communities represented by The Leadership Conference, including low-income people, people of color, and women, all have a great stake in making sure our economy works for everyone – not just the wealthiest Americans and businesses.

We urge the Senate and President to reject any deal that makes the lives of everyday Americans harder in order to pad the earnings of big business.”
