WASHINGTON – On Thursday, June 18 at 12:30pm ET, civil rights and education advocates will discuss four fixes that must be included to improve the Senate’s education bill, the Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA).

The coalition of civil rights, disability rights, and education advocacy organizations has come together to ensure that the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act honors the law’s rich civil rights legacy.  The current Senate iteration of this act is the ECAA which, in its current form, betrays this legacy.

The organizations are coalescing around four necessary fixes to the ECAA, including strengthening accountability for schools and districts to educate all groups of students, including students of color, students with disabilities, low-income students, and English learners; improved data collection; mandates for states to close disparities in resources for high-poverty schools; and sufficient oversight from the U.S. Department of Education.
