WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to the Obama administration’s decision today to appeal a ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit that continues to block implementation of President Obama’s deferred action initiatives—Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and the expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):

“We applaud the Obama administration’s decision to pursue a Supreme Court appeal. These immigration initiatives are legally sound, morally right, and economically smart.

The Fifth Circuit’s misguided decision in this politically motivated, anti-immigrant lawsuit only serves to delay justice and fairness for the millions of hardworking immigrant families who continue to live in fear of being torn apart and deported.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the President’s announcement of DAPA and expanded DACA, we re-commit ourselves to advocating for comprehensive immigration reform and protecting the rights of the immigrant families who contribute to our communities every day in the hope of achieving the American Dream.

We urge the Supreme Court to take up this case as soon as possible and to rule on the side of families—not partisanship—by upholding the President’s common sense initiatives.”
