More Secrecy and Evasion Proves Need to Halt Kavanaugh’s Nomination
WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement following the news of sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh:
“Kavanaugh is being considered for a lifetime position on the Supreme Court. The sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh is the latest cause for alarm and must be taken seriously, while respecting the privacy, rights, and decisions of the survivor.
But instead of taking the time needed to carefully vet Brett Kavanaugh, time and again, Chairman Grassley and Senate Republicans have broken their own rules and disregarded bipartisan traditions to willfully hide crucial pieces of his troubling record. Their shameful tactics make clear they are intent on simply rushing through this nominee.
“Once cast, senators cannot take back their vote. They need to be sure they have Kavanaugh’s full record before they proceed on his nomination to the Supreme Court.”
