WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after Trump’s re-nomination package of judicial nominees  many with anti-civil rights records:

“During the first two years of his presidency, Trump, his administration, and Senate Republicans have done everything they can to reshape the federal judiciary to roll back our civil and human rights at record speed. The latest list of nominees, many with troubling anti-civil rights records, indicates they don’t intend to slow down their destructive trend.

“This must stop. These extreme nominees, including Neomi Rao, Wendy Vitter, and Chad Readler, will not be fair-minded nor independent. We urge Chairman Graham to uphold the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to remain an independent check on the president and to protect our courts. All senators must take seriously their duty to protect the civil and human rights of their constituents, and should demand a thorough review of every nominee and reject those with anti-civil rights records.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
