WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens:

“Justice John Paul Stevens served his country bravely, in uniform, and independently, as a jurist. He left an indelible mark on American jurisprudence – sometimes in the majority, and sometimes in the minority, authoring fiery dissents. He served as a voice of fairness and demonstrated a deep respect for the rule of law and civil rights. Appointed by a Republican president, Justice Stevens’ tenure reminds us that a judge’s duty is not to a political party, but to the Constitution. Our thoughts are with his family, and with the many who have been touched by his lifetime of service.”
