WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding reports that the federal government will reverse a nearly two-decade moratorium to resume the federal death penalty:

“The death penalty has no place in the United States. Attorney General Barr’s decision today to reverse the federal moratorium on executions goes against the grain of a now growing consensus in the states to abolish this practice. Our federal and state justice systems should not kill anyone for any reason. We must end this cruel, ineffective, and irreversible punishment once and for all.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
