WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, Fair Courts Campaign Director at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to advance the nomination of Stephen Schwartz to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims:

“It’s irresponsible that Chairman Graham convened the committee to continue churning out Trump and McConnell’s extreme judicial nominees while ignoring the devastating shock this pandemic is having on our country. As too many people need more relief, it is shameful that the Senate is spending time on a nominee like Schwartz, who has dedicated his career to defending some of the most extreme voting rights restrictions and anti-LGBTQ measures. His recently revealed offensive college writings make clear that his beliefs extend well beyond his legal arguments.

“Schwartz is unfit for the Court of Federal Claims. Senators must oppose his nomination to this important court.”

Read The Leadership Conference’s letter in opposition to the confirmation of Stephen Schwartz. Schwartz has previously claimed that “inequality of means and resources is a natural aspect of the human condition,” programs like Social Security and Medicare are “harmful,” and that “abortion is wrong.”
