WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on Trump’s tweet regarding the election:
“Trump’s latest attempt to disrupt our elections is desperate and wrong. It is an effort to distract from the alarming economic numbers and COVID-19 infection and mortality rates. Under our laws and our Constitution, no president has the power to move our elections.
“His depiction of vote-by-mail is clearly designed to sow confusion. Vote-by-mail is one of the safest and most secure forms of voting available. We must devote our energies to pressing Congress to provide $3.6 billion to states and local election officials to ensure that all voters can safely cast a ballot in whatever way works best for them.”
The Leadership Conference and more than 150 other civil rights organizations called on Congress to swiftly pass legislation to protect the integrity of the 2020 election and counter the historical disenfranchisement of communities of color and voters with disabilities in America. That letter is available here.
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
