WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the appointment of Tom Brunell to the Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee:

“The appointment of Tom Brunell is yet another example of President Trump’s disdain for the nonpartisan nature of the census and the integrity of the agency’s scientific work. Brunell’s ‘expertise’ is in advancing partisan redistricting plans for Republicans. His appointment to CSAC only further damages the bureau’s reputation and makes it harder to rebuild public confidence in the Census Bureau and the vital statistics it produces.”

The Leadership Conference’s previous statement on reports of Brunell’s appointment as deputy director of the U.S. Census Bureau is available here.
