WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Casey Pitts to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California:

“We applaud the Senate’s confirmation of Casey Pitts to the Northern District of California. He brings significant experience protecting the rights of working people and the freedom to vote — a civil rights background that is unfortunately underrepresented in our judiciary. Mr. Pitts will also be the only openly LGBTQ Article III judge actively serving on this court. Judicial decision-making is improved when judges bring different lived experiences, especially from communities that have been historically excluded, to the bench.”
