WASHINGTON Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta’s service at the U.S. Department of Justice:

“Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta entered her position at a critical time for justice and equality in this nation’s history, and she rose to the occasion as a fearless defender of democracy and civil rights. The country is better off because she answered the call to serve. Of course, as former president and CEO of The Leadership Conference from 2017 until her nomination, we are particularly proud of her many accomplishments in government, especially as the first woman of color and first civil rights lawyer to serve as associate attorney general.

“Vanita embodied the spirit of justice every day, bringing a vital civil rights and racial justice focus to one of our nation’s most important jobs at one of the most challenging moments for our rights, our country, and our democracy. Her civil rights leadership made a difference at the department, and we thank her for her tremendous service to our nation.

“Vanita has helped restore the Justice Department’s role as chief enforcer of civil rights, pursuing important police reform work, leading the department’s Reproductive Rights Taskforce, and overseeing a range of litigation efforts to protect our fundamental rights. Her affirmative vision for an America as good as its ideals, and her strong commitment to making our laws better serve all communities, have mattered deeply.

“The Leadership Conference is grateful for Vanita Gupta’s tenure and leadership at the Department of Justice, and we urge the department to continue its crucially important and urgent work to protect the civil rights of all people.”
