Background:

In September 2023, the Center for Civil Rights and Technology (Center) was launched as a joint project of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund. The unprecedented initiative aims to create a fair, just, opportunity-rich, and rights-advancing future for all in the face of artificial intelligence and other technological advancements being made. The Center will serve as a convener, collaborator, and communicator on strategic policy development and public education on issues, ideas, and potential innovations that can advance, as well as protect, equity in society.

About the Role:

We seek a Sr. Manager, Strategic Communications to join our Communications and the Center for Civil Rights and Technology (Center) Departments. The ideal candidate will have experience working with media, developing messaging, understanding complex policy areas, and working with a large, cross-organizational team to develop and execute communication campaigns. This is a hybrid role managing communications for the Center on issues such as technology regulation and development, social media accountability, artificial intelligence, disinformation, and other related areas.

This position will report to the Managing Director, Communications. It will also have a hybrid reporting relationship to the Sr. Director, Center for Civil Rights and Technology. This position is part of the collective bargaining unit.

What you will do:

  • Develop communications strategies to elevate the work, profile, and public education strategies of the Center’s advocacy work to advance The Leadership Conference’s mission.
  • Develop, drive, and implement strategic communication plans for the Center, including earned media, editorial, publications, research, organizational narrative/messaging, and more.
  • Coordinate and maintain effective technical support and strategic guidance around communications strategies for the Center.
  • Work with communications, policy, campaigns, field staff, and partner organizations to develop and execute advocacy initiatives.
  • Draft external press materials that deliver clear, consistent, and consequential messages, including press releases, advisories, statements, op-eds, etc.
  • Draft strategic communications plans that draw upon strategic communication tactics and work with the digital, social media, and creative teams to integrate innovative content uses.
  • Respond to emerging priorities, manage crisis communications, and work collaboratively on technology-related communications.
  • Maintain and disseminate talking points on issues related to media, technology, and telecommunications to support the work of the Center and coalition partners.
  • Proof and copy-edit written communications for internal and external dissemination.
  • Serve on the organization’s editorial proofing team.
  • Other duties as necessary and related.

What you will bring:

  • A minimum of six years of strategic communications experience – including a demonstrated record of working in message development, media relations, and other communication tactics.
  • A strong familiarity with technology policy issues and the technology news ecosystem.
  • Passion for civil and human rights and work in non-profit is preferred.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively about deploying the full suite of communications tools to advance civil and human rights.
  • A collaborative, dependable self-starter with a record of producing high-quality work for different audiences under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with maintaining an organization’s narrative and message structure and excellent writing skills.
  • Ability to quickly synthesize and distill large quantities of complex policy and/or issue-related information.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Keen eye for detail and accuracy.

Salary Range – $97,187 – $118,413, dependent on years of related experience.

Currently, staff has the option to work from the office or home while we determine our long-term policy on remote and hybrid work. Please note this position is not permanently remote and over time the person filling this role may be required to work on occasion or regularly from the Washington, DC-based office.
