2014 Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner

On Thursday, May 15, 2014, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 social justice organizations, will come together for the 38th annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

The Humphrey Award, the social justice community’s highest honor, is presented annually to outstanding individuals who best exemplify Senator Humphrey’s “selfless and devoted service in the cause of equality” – an honor roll, which, over the years, has included President William Clinton; Representative John Lewis; Senator Patrick Leahy; Representative Connie Morella; Senator Tom Daschle; civil rights champions Dr. Dorothy Height and Barbara Arnwine; disability advocate Tammy Duckworth; director Steven Spielberg; actor and activist Danny Glover; consumer protection advocate Martin Eakes, FDIC Chairwoman Sheila Bair; and labor leader Dolores Huerta, among others.

The year’s largest gathering of the civil and human rights community, the dinner brings together a who’s who in social justice – members of the Executive Branch, both houses of Congress, business leaders, educators, civil and human rights leaders, and the next generation of social justice advocates.
Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has been a tireless voice for equality and equal opportunity. Throughout 10 years in the House of Representatives, three decades in the Senate, and in his current role as chair of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, he has been a steadfast champion for civil and human rights. He was the principal sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has become known as the “Emancipation Proclamation for people with disabilities.” He is a strong voice for workers’ rights, has worked to protect the middle class and those at the bottom of the economic ladder, promoted access to quality education for all children and quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

Randi Weingarten is president of the 1.5 million-member American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, representing teachers, higher education faculty and staff, health care professionals and other school-related local, state and government employees. In her current role, as well as her previous responsibilities as president of New York’s United Federation of Teachers, she has been held in the highest regard as a labor leader, attorney and educator and has led efforts to make education reform a front-burner issue on national and union agendas. Randi has been a leading voice in dialogue among parents, teachers, community partners and public officials regarding equal access to quality education. Randi also plays a critical role in the coalition as a member of the board of The Leadership Conference.
Eliseo Medina is one of the nation’s most ardent and successful labor organizers and an expert at building diverse coalitions among local community and national partners. As a longstanding voice for social and economic justice for the United Farm Workers, and in his executive leadership roles at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), he has stood at the vanguard of struggles for just wages, workers’ rights, voting rights and access to health care. Eliseo’s leadership and impassioned engagement in the “Fast for Families” reflect his steadfast commitment to advancing immigration reform that protects civil and human rights and his dedication to charting commonsense pathways to citizenship.

The 38th annual Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner will be held on May 15, 2014, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
