Coppin State University Establishes Social Work Research Center in Dr. Dorothy Height’s Name

Coppin State University Development Foundation, Inc., and Dr. & Mrs. Reginal S. Avery will hold an event this Sunday, April 25, to honor civil and human rights icon Dr. Dorothy I. Height.

The event — “Hats On for Dr. Dorothy I. Height” — will launch two programs at the university in her honor. The Dr. Dorothy I. Height Endowed Chair and Lectureship in Social Work and Social Justice will be offered to renowned educators, researchers and scholars who have “demonstrated their commitment to promoting social change and social justice. The Dr. Dorothy I. Height Center for the Advancement of Social Justice will expand the university’s research in the areas of social justice and environmental justice.


Dr. Height is the president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women and the chair of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.  She has served in a variety of capacities during the Civil Rights Movement, and was often the most prominent woman among the leadership of the movement.


The event will be held in Baltimore at the university’s Physical Education Area from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  For more information, visit Coppin State’s website
