Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner: Celebrating 60 Years of The Leadership Conference

Media 05.7,10

Next week, hundreds of civil rights and human rights leaders, policymakers, and others will attend The Leadership Conference’s Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award Dinner, held each year at the Hilton Washington in Washington, D.C.

The dinner is the civil rights community’s biggest party, a chance to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and recommit to working hard to address the challenges ahead.

This year’s dinner is particularly special, as it marks the 60th anniversary of The Leadership Conference and its decision to honor the legacy and the foresight of its  founders by fully incorporating the term “human rights” into its name so as to recognize the central importance of both concepts to the coalition’s work.

There is a reception before the dinner, where guests mix and mingle, and this year there will be a special tribute to civil rights icon Dr. Dorothy I. Height, who passed away a few weeks ago.  Dr. Height was the chair of The Leadership Conference for more than 15 years and was also the honorary chair of the dinner committee for nearly a decade.

This year’s dinner, honoring Sen. Patrick Leahy, Karen Narasaki, Gara LaMarche, and Harry Belafonte, is next Wednesday, May 12. Tickets and sponsorships are still available

If you can’t attend in person, we’d still love to have you celebrate with us as a virtual guest at the dinner. Support The Leadership Conference’s work by making a donation now, and we’ll give you exclusive first look at photos from the 2010 dinner and a copy of the 60th anniversary souvenir book.
