Vote Recommendation: Oppose H.R. 6918 – Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act

Dear Member of Congress,

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 240 national organizations committed to promoting and protecting the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States, urges you to oppose H.R. 6918 – Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, when it comes up for a vote on the House floor. The legislation blocks a Proposed Rule from the Administration to strengthen the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and prevent the misuse of TANF funds for anti-abortion facilities, which include so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” that operate under the guise of legitimate health care providers. These organizations claim to help pregnant people, but instead attempt to coerce, deceive, and manipulate them into carrying pregnancies to term. These centers are known to provide pregnant people, including minors, with biased and inaccurate information and purposely mislead pregnant people into thinking they are obtaining health care. Anti-abortion counseling centers are widely considered to be unethical by health care professionals and the American Medical Association (AMA). If passed, this legislation would inhibit pregnant people from receiving the medical care they urgently need from legitimate providers, and would disproportionately harm those who already face difficulties accessing abortion and reproductive health care, including people of color and people with low incomes. Policymakers must reject this legislation. The Leadership Conference intends to include your position on H.R. 6918 in our voting records for the 118th Congress.

For these reasons, we urge you to vote against H.R. 6918. We intend to score this vote in our voting records.

Thank you for your consideration. Please reach out to Peggy Ramin, policy counsel for health care and poverty, at [email protected] with any questions.

Best regards,
Jesselyn McCurdy
Executive Vice President of Government Affairs
