Trump Cannot Change Immigration Laws Through Executive Action

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice’s proposed changes to asylum regulations:

“No president can change the law through executive action. Our country is still governed by laws, including those that provide a process for the persecuted and oppressed who seek refuge here. This is the Trump administration’s latest attack on immigrants founded on hate and xenophobia. Be it through the courts or Congress, this cruel proposal will not be permitted to go into effect.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
