Unusual Suspects to Call on Senators to Reject Nuclear Option, Strange Bedfellows Make Common Cause on Power Grab

Washington – Tomorrow, Tuesday April 12th at 2:15 PM, over 140 organizations, representing a broad cross section of groups that seldom – if ever – take positions on judicial nominations will call on senators to oppose the effort by some Republican leaders to eliminate the Senate filibuster of judicial nominations. Known as the “nuclear option,” this radical change in Senate rules would dismantle our system of checks and balances and overturn more than 200 years of Senate tradition.

The group of 142 organizations includes the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, YWCA, LULAC, Common Cause and the Methodist Federation and represents a broad range of interests. The group will deliver a letter to Senators Frist and Reid calling for caution and urging senators to oppose the so-called “nuclear option”.
