WASHINGTONLena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Nusrat Choudhury to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York:

“Nusrat Choudhury will be a tremendous jurist for the Eastern District of New York. She has dedicated her impressive career to equal justice, having challenged discriminatory policies that specifically target communities of color. Ms. Choudhury also makes history as the first Muslim woman and first Bangladeshi American ever confirmed by the Senate to serve as an Article III judge. Bringing historically excluded and underrepresented perspectives to our federal courts improves judicial decisionmaking and bolsters our democracy. We applaud the Senate for confirming Ms. Choudhury.”
