WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after Trump announced his support for a short-term funding measure to temporarily end the shutdown:

“Trump created this catastrophe and he’s now claiming credit for temporarily ending it. The longest shutdown in modern history has deeply harmed federal workers, contractors, their families, and the communities that depend on them. In addition, key civil rights protections went unenforced. Instead of offering real solutions, Trump led a campaign of lies and misinformation, stoking fear while showing no compassion for those who were suffering due to his stubbornness.

“As Congress works on longer-term legislation, they must only fund proven measures that will enhance the security of our borders and recognize the humanity of those who come here in search of a better life.”
