Washington – The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), the nation’s oldest, largest and most diverse civil and human rights coalition, today criticized John Engler’s decision to endorse John Roberts for a seat on the Supreme Court. The statement of Wade Henderson, LCCR’s Executive Director follows:

“It is sorely disappointing that the leader of the National Association of Manufacturers has decided to endorse John Roberts for a seat on the Supreme Court before questions about his record on civil rights, voting rights and other vital issues have been resolved.

“The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights does not understand how the NAM can support Roberts when so many of its member companies are committed to civil rights progress and the enforcement of civil rights laws.

“Coming out in support of Roberts before all relevant and requested documents are released is a clear sign that John Engler is aligning his organization with those who want to roll back civil rights progress.

“Mr. Engler has chosen the path of political and moral expediency over commitment to protecting the rights of minorities, people with disabilities, women, and other citizens.”
