WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the nation’s premier civil and human rights coalition, has adopted a new name: The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

“There is and always has been an inherent connection between civil and human rights,” said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “The Leadership Conference itself was founded in 1950 at the dawn of the modern civil rights movement just two years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and five years after both the internment of Japanese Americans on U.S. soil and the Holocaust, a cataclysmic violation of human rights.”

“So in many ways, the decision to formally incorporate ‘human rights’ into our name is a return to first principles. At the same time, as we enter our 60th year we believe the link between civil and human rights will be even more important to our ability to address the serious challenges of the 21st century and to find common purpose on issues that help move us forward as a nation.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
