Historic Senate Vote Moves Wall Street Reform One Step Closer

Tonight, in a historic vote, the Senate passed sweeping legislation to overhaul the nation’s financial system.

“The Senate bill to reform Wall Street is an enormous victory for ordinary working Americans and their families,” said Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference.

The Senate legislation contains provisions designed to hold Wall Street accountable, end the casino economy, and create a federal agency to protect Americans from abusive lending practices like the ones that led to the current recession.

Now the differences between the Senate bill and the version passed by the House of Representatives in December will need to be worked out so that one bill can go to President Obama for signing.

“The Leadership Conference will continue to advocate for the strongest financial protections possible for the American people as the bill moves toward final congressional approval,” said Zirkin.
