Census Telephone Assistance Line Closes July 30

2020 Census 07.29,10

The U.S. Census Bureau is reminding the public that on Friday, July 30, it will discontinue its toll-free telephone assistance line. The bureau reports that more than 130,000 people have completed their 2010 Census questionnaire over the phone.

“I urge residents that believe they did not receive a form, who did not mail it back or have not been contacted by a census enumerator to call 1-866-872-6868 to ensure they are included in the 2010 Census, making this the best count of the American population to date,” said U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves.

The phone service had been offered for more than three months, open 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Russian.

With the 2010 Census nearing completion, national and state population counts will be delivered to the president by December 31, 2010, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

To help ensure a full and accurate census, The Leadership Conference Education Fund partnered with four national civil rights organizations and several state-based groups to encourage census participation among hard-to-count populations in 13 key areas around the country.
