Civil and Human Rights Coalition Calls Obama Budget Plan ‘Fair’ to Low- and Moderate-Income Americans
The
Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200
organizations, welcomed the
Obama administration’s $4 trillion deficit reduction plan released this
week.
In
contrast to the budget proposal offered by Rep. Paul Ryan, R. Wis., the Obama
plan “is rooted in deeply held American values and our collective duty to
provide a measure of economic security to all Americans,” said Nancy
Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference, in a statement.
The
Obama plan restores a sense of balance in the debate over the nation’s fiscal
future, in contrast to the Ryan plan
built around dismantling Medicaid, Medicare, and other safety net programs
to provide tax cuts for the wealthy.
“While
we know that the devil is in the details, the path laid out by the president
goes a long way toward protecting low- and moderate-income Americans, many of
whom are people of color, women, seniors and people with disabilities,” said
Zirkin.
“The
Leadership Conference welcomes a plan that involves appropriate revenue
increases in addition to thoughtful spending reductions,” she added.
