Washington, D.C. – Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement after the Senate Banking Committee voted to move Richard Cordray’s nomination to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to the Senate floor:

“The senators who voted in Cordray’s favor sent a message to the greediest and most unscrupulous elements on Wall Street that the CFPB should be led by an experienced and tactical advocate.

The financial mess created by these lenders has resulted in losses of $194 billion in the African-American community and $177 billion the Latino community, the largest exodus of wealth ever recorded from these groups. If the CFPB is left to flounder without a capable leader, as Senate Republicans have vowed, American families will continue to struggle without a strong regulator that can protect them from deceptive and complicated financial products.

It’s now up to the Senate to protect American consumers by confirming Richard Cordray without delay and equipping the nascent CFPB to protect consumers and our economy from the excesses of Wall Street.”

The Leadership Conference sent this letter to the Committee yesterday urging his confirmation.
